Milky Mushroom "Seeds" (Spawn) & Care Guide

The Milky Mushroom (Calocybe indica) is a premium, robust mushroom variety native to India. It is highly favored for its elongated thick stems, pure white color, and excellent shelf life. Unlike most popular mushrooms that prefer cool weather, the milky mushroom thrives in hot, humid, tropical climates, making it an exceptional choice for summer cultivation.

The "Seed" (Mushroom Spawn)

Just like other fungi, milky mushrooms do not grow from botanical seeds. They are cultivated using grain spawn—typically sorghum or wheat grains thoroughly colonized by dense, white Calocybe indica mycelium.

Quick Care Guide

The Substrate: Milky mushrooms thrive best on pasteurized paddy straw. The straw must be chopped, soaked in water, and pasteurized (either by boiling or chemical treatment) to kill any competing molds before the spawn is mixed in.

Phase 1: Incubation (Spawning): Mix the grain spawn into the moist straw and pack it tightly into clear plastic bags. Keep these bags in a dark, clean room at a warm temperature of 25°C to 35°C (77°F to 95°F). Within 20 to 25 days, the mycelium will entirely run through the straw, turning the bag completely white.

Phase 2: Casing (The Crucial Step): Unlike oyster mushrooms, milky mushrooms will not fruit without a layer of soil on top. Once the bag is fully colonized, cut open the top of the bag and apply a 1-inch layer of sterilized, moist casing soil (usually a mix of garden soil, well-rotted cow manure, and coco peat).

Phase 3: Cropping & Climate Control: Move the cased bags to a room with indirect light and plenty of fresh air ventilation. Maintain a high room temperature between 28°C and 38°C (82°F to 100°F).

Watering & Humidity: Mist the casing soil gently with a spray bottle 1 to 2 times a day to keep it damp but not waterlogged. The air humidity must be kept very high (around 80% to 85%). Within 8 to 10 days of casing, tiny white pinheads will start pushing through the soil layer.

Harvest Tip: Milky mushrooms grow quite large and look like elegant umbrella-shaped buttons. Harvest them when the cap reaches about 5 to 8 cm in diameter, right before the cap edges begin to flatten out completely. Gently twist the mushroom from the base of the soil rather than pulling or cutting it. Each bag can yield 2 to 3 flushes of fresh mushrooms at intervals of 10 days!
