Spinach (Spinacia oleracea) is a fast-growing, nutrient-dense leafy green that thrives in cool weather. It is an incredibly rewarding plant for home gardeners, offering a continuous harvest of crisp, iron-rich leaves with relatively low maintenance.
The Spinach Seed
Unlike beetroot, a spinach seed is a single, individual seed that can be either smooth or prickly depending on the variety. They are small, round, and light brown. Because they don’t form clusters, you have much more control over exact plant spacing right from the start.
Quick Care Guide
Soil & Location: Spinach thrives in full sun to partial shade. It prefers loose, fertile, and well-draining soil with a rich amount of organic matter. It prefers slightly neutral to alkaline soil.
Sowing: Sow seeds about 0.5 inches (1 cm) deep and roughly 2 inches apart. If planting in rows, keep the rows about 8 inches apart.
Thinning: Once the seedlings develop their first true leaves, thin them out to stand 4 to 6 inches apart. This gives the individual plants enough breathing room to grow into full, bushy rosettes.
Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist but never soggy. Spinach has a shallow root system, so regular, shallow watering is much better than infrequent, deep soaking.
Fertilization: Unlike root vegetables, spinach loves nitrogen. Feeding the soil with organic compost, well-rotted manure, or a nitrogen-rich liquid fertilizer will promote rapid, lush, and tender leaf growth.
Temperature Control: Spinach is a cool-season crop. If the weather gets too hot (above 25°C or 77°F), the plant will "bolt"—meaning it will quickly send up a flower stalk, stop producing leaves, and turn bitter.
Harvest Tip: You don't need to pull up the whole plant to enjoy it! Use the "cut-and-come-again" method by harvesting just the outer leaves as needed. The inner leaves will continue to grow for a sustained harvest over several weeks.
