Broccoli (Brassica oleracea var. italica) is a premium, cool-season crop prized for its dense, nutrient-packed flower heads. While it requires a bit more patience than quick leafy greens, growing it from seed is highly rewarding.

The Broccoli Seed

Broccoli seeds are tiny, perfectly round, dark brown to black spheres typical of the brassica family (like cabbage and mustard). They germinate remarkably fast—often sprouting within 4 to 7 days—but because the seeds are so small, careful depth control is key during planting.

Quick Care Guide

Soil & Location: Broccoli needs full sun (at least 6 hours of direct sunlight) to develop tight, heavy heads. It thrives in rich, deeply cultivated, and well-draining soil with plenty of organic compost.

Sowing: Plant seeds 0.25 to 0.5 inches deep. If starting indoors or in a seedling tray, transplant them outdoors once they have 4–5 true leaves. If sowing directly, space seeds about 3 inches apart initially.

Spacing (Crucial for Big Heads): Broccoli plants get quite large and are heavy feeders. Thin or transplant them to stand at least 18 to 24 inches apart. Crowding the plants will result in very small, loose heads.

Watering: Provide regular, deep watering (about 1 to 1.5 inches of water per week). Water at the base of the plant rather than from above, as keeping the developing heads wet can invite fungal diseases or rot.

Fertilization: Broccoli is a heavy feeder. Give it a steady supply of nitrogen early on for strong plant structure, and switch to a balanced fertilizer with boron and calcium as it matures to prevent hollow stems and support healthy head development.

Temperature Control: It grows best in temperatures between 15°C and 22°C (60°F–72°F). If the weather gets too hot, the broccoli will skip heading entirely and bolt into yellow flowers.

Harvest Tip: Cut the central head while the buds are tight and green, right before they start to open or turn yellow. Leave the rest of the plant in the ground! Most varieties will reward you by growing smaller, delicious side-shoots for weeks afterward.
